Well Hotties, Tony Horton has done it again! The program that revolutionized home fitness has launched it’s 3rd program, P90X 3 on the 10th of December :)

The original P90X has changed the bodies and lives of thousands of people including myself. (To read about my p90x experience click here)

Although the original is AWESOME, it was long and intense - you needed to commit about 1 hour a day. However with the new program, you'll still get the same intensity and the same results in HALF the time. Just 30 min of work to get you looking and feeling awesome!!

Also, unlike P90X2, which was a continuation of the original, you don't  need to be in stellar shape to start. You can be a total beginner and do the modifications until you gain the strength to do the advanced moves.

When is P90X3 available for purchase? P90X3 will be available to order by end of day 12/10.

How long does it take to complete P90X3? P90X3 is a 90 day program, split into 3 Blocks. Blocks 1 & 2 each consist of 4 weeks, while Block 3 lasts 5 weeks. Additionally, the Elite Block calendar, which is an optional block to be completed AFTER the initial 90 days, lasts 4 weeks. The Elite Block includes 3 workouts not included within the P90X3 Base Kit.

How long are the workouts for P90X3? All P90X3 workouts are 30 minutes. Ah-ma-zing!!! The lone exception is the X3 Ab Ripper workout (15 minutes), included within the Deluxe Kit. Most workouts include a 2-3 minute cool down period.

So, I haven’t blogged in for a VERY long time. I could make a ton of excuses as to why, but the reality is I’ve been scared and lazy. I have a total love affair with my bed and couch and I’m scared of both failure and success. It’s crazy!

I heard a long time ago that humans can achieve anything if they just get over their fear and laziness – and I couldn’t agree more! Those two things stop me from moving forward, changing and growing in every area of my life. There’s comfort in being stuck, but being stuck is a shitty place to be. Everyone is happiest when they are progressing towards something.

So how do you get over fear and laziness? It’s pretty simple. In the words of the famous Nike slogan – JUST DO IT!

Know your fear and get over it. Understand your laziness and push through the discomfort.

Don’t think about it too much. I’m totally guilty of this – It’s part of my love affair with my couch…I can honestly sit and think for hours while doing absolutly nothing! I also see this behaviour in my students as well.  I have one student in particular who is really sweet and cute. He has a round face and glasses and talks slowly. He has an old man quality to him. When I ask him why he hasn’t started his work he throws his head back, looks up at the ceiling and slowly says “I’m thinking”.  Even though he is needy, thinking has become an excuse for him to do nothing.  Thinking without action is useless.

Set a date if you need to, but don’t wait for the ‘right time’ since there’s never a right time. There will always be social functions, birthday parties, work obligations, family reunions etc. Those are excuses and don’t lead to productivity. And speaking of excuses – watch your excuses carefully. Be honest with yourself and know the difference between a reason and an excuse.

Don’t wait for when you ‘feel like it’ cause if you’ve been out of the health and wellness arena for a while you won’t feel like it. You’ll feel like watching TV, or eating some pasta alfredo.

Start small. Especially if changing your eating or exercise habits. If you jump in to quickly you may overdo and end up injured and in bed all weekend (that’s from personal experience – boo) Change a few things first instead of trying to do it all at once. You will burnout otherwise.

I believe that laziness and fear are base instinctual emotions that were developed for survival purposes. But if you’re reading this I doubt that you are in ‘survival mode’ so don’t give in to those base instincts and push your way out.

Feel your fear regularly, get over your laziness and accomplish something.

Lessons from Olympians

This man showed up at my school yesterday to give a presentation to the students. His name is Martin Reader and he made the female teachers (and some of the male) swoon. He played beach voleyball for Canada in the 2012 London Olympics.

And despite being 6″7′ and lovely to look at, like all successful people, he had his fair share of adversity to overcome on his way to becoming an Olympian.

He is one of these people who have a naturally strong desire to succeed. He decided that at a  age 6 he was going to be an Olympian. So he started to train as a swimmer. But at the age of 11 he started to become allergic to the chlorine in the pool and suddenly his dream of being an Olympic swimmer came crashing down. But this didn’t stop him. He simply changed sports and began to do something that he was able to do.

The lesson that he taught the kids was this… nothing new, but true nonetheless: the road to success is hard and sometimes is hurts. But perseverance is key and you have to push through the discomfort in order to end up on top.

Gold Medalist!

It was also awesome to meet the one athlete that won the only gold medal for Canada, Rosie MacLennan. She won it for trampolining. She was able to jump so high that she was able to high five Martin Reader with his hand raised! That’s like being able to touch an 8 foot ceiling!

She talked about the mental aspect of being an athlete and how you can be your own worst enemy. She told the story of a time when she was feeling particulary down about herself and her abilites. Her coach asked her if she felt that she could be the best in the world.

She said no.

He then asked her ‘why not?’

Her life changed at that moment as she couldn’t come up with a real reason why she couldn’t be the best.

She was obviously right :)

I also got to touch her gold medal which was pretty cool considering it will most likely be the only time I get to touch one.

 

 

 

 

 

 

But the one Olympian that really impressed me and many of the kids was Tyler Miller. He won gold at the paralympics for men’s basketball. He had an amazing story of overcoming adversity.

At the age of 22, he was working in a trade job and there was an industrial accident where 1000lbs of metal fell on him and crushed his back that left him paralysed. After months in a hospital, he went home and stayed there. Depression had set in. Eventually a friend convinced him to leave his house and try out wheel chair basketball. When he first got to the center he was embarrassed as most of the kids that were playing were 12 and 13 years old. But he got over his ego and started to play.

5 years later he won a gold medal!

His ablity to move in his game chair was remarkable. He was able to weave in and out of kids walking in front of him without even flinching. I was afraid that he was going to run over them. But he kept on moving with grace and ease.

What I learned

Nobody’s journey to success is easy and smooth. There will be many bumps and road blocks along the way. And sometimes success doesn’t come in the package that you were expecting. It is your mind and ego that will cause you to fail if you let it. But with persistence and faith, it will reveal itself.

Success is messy, bumpy and hard – but oh so worth it!!
