Why You Need a Little Sacrifice to Get Healthy

Sacrifice vs Deprivation

We live in a world of opposites…what goes up must come down, hot and cold, win and lose. You cannot have one without the other. So you cannot gain something without a little sacrifice.

First of all, I just want to clarify that sacrifice doesn not mean deprivation. Deprivation only leads to indulgence. Deprivation brings about feelings of intense want and desire. If I tell you to not think about a polar bear, what are you inevitably going to think about? A polar bear! The same thing happens with food.  If I tell you to not eat a burger, you are going to want a burger. There is no point of always depriving yourself of super yummy, sugary, fatty unhealthy foods. If you do that, you will most likely cave and binge.

Sacrifice is a Conscious Choice

So what are you going to choose to sacrifice in order to gain? That all depends on your current life situation and what you have to lose and what you want to achieve. Let’s say you would love to look like the models that grace the covers of fitness magazines. Now this is totally achievable and it you want it, go for it!! But it requires a ton of sacrifice – fitness models workout for several hours a day and eat a very restricted diet. A tremendous amount of time and effort needs to be sacrificed in order to gain the physique of a fitness model.

Once upon a time, I contemplated becoming a fitness model but after researching what needs to go into it, I wasn’t willing to give up time with my son or make the necessary changes in my social life. I just love food too much so it’s not the lifestyle that I desire. Maybe one day, but not now.

What I desire is to have enough energy to keep up after my son, to climb a flight of stairs with ease, and to feel comfortable in a bikini. Those are my health and fitness goals.

So what do I need to sacrifice in order to achieve this? I sacrifice watching late night TV to go to bed by 10:00, so I get enough sleep to wake up at 5:00 am to work out. I sacrifice some time surfing on the web to plan my meals. I sacrifice 2 hours on Saturday morning preparing my meals and snacks for the week. I (sometimes) sacrifice my glass of wine at the end of the day. But the biggest thing I have to sacrifice in order to gain the life I want, is feeling comfortable. I have learned to accept and embrace being comfortably uncomfortable.

What are you willing to sacrifice?
