Set Yourself Up for Success – Time To Get Real

by Ali Piazza

In order to start anything you need to know where you want to go. Otherwise you will just wander aimlessly and most likely stumble along the way. When you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, the easier it is to get there.

So right now – in a perfect world, if you could wave a magic wand and immediately get results what would they be? Think about it…

BUT before you start, there’s a catch… you need to be realistic.

Here’s a little story of my first hit with reality!

Wanting to look like a fashion model

The early 90’s was the era of the supermodels. Tall, thin, impossibly gorgeous women were plastered all over the media and they were the standard of beauty at that time. At the tender age of 13, I remember reading all the magazines idolizing their prettiness. I distinctly remember flipping open my YM (young and modern) magazine and seeing a Cover Girl ad with the model Niki Taylor. Since she was a model, she was obviously tall, thin and very beautiful. I remember being mesmerized by her beauty, but what stood out to me was the fact that she was only 16! She was only 3 years older than me! I remember wishing and praying that if I could possibly look like her in 3 years, then I would have everything that my little 13 year old heart desired…beauty, popularity and attention from boys.

It took me a few years, but eventually I had to resign the fact that chances were my genetics would not cooperate and I’d never be as tall as her, nor as slender and I’d never be as pretty as she was. For me, and many others, looking like a supermodel was an unattainable dream.

Expecting to be overweight

Once I trashed that expectation, I went to the opposite direction…with the expectation that I would end up overweight. Once again at a young age, I heard a stat that if your parents were overweight, then there was an 80% chance that their children would be also. My parents have always struggled with their weight so there is a definite genetic predisposition for me to potentially gain a ton. So, for most of my adolescence I thought that would be my destiny to do so.

Lesson Learned!

Over the years,  I realized my family members looked the way they did because of the choices they were making. I learned for the first time that genetics do play a part in your appearance and health, but that is only part of the equation. So while I’ll never be 5’10, 115 lbs and a size 2…I can be 5’5″, 130lbs and a beautiful, healthy size 6

The choices of how you live your life are ultimately up to you! Own your actions and don’t make excuses. (click to tweet @healthsmartsexy)

The point of this little story is that no matter how hard I tried,  I would never look like Niki Taylor. I had to trash those expectations, because they were impossible to meet. Nor should I expect to be overweight because of my environment.

Fast forward 20 years and I still have to remind myself to be realistic with what I can acheieve. In fact, I had to it the other day when I was watching “Telephone” from Lady Gaga (whom I LOVE). “I want her body” I found myself saying.

NO! I need to say “I want my body.” I want my body to be the healthiest and fittest it can be.

So, can you change your body to one that you desire?

Yes and no – both your environment and your genetics play a role in your body composition.  So while you can totally whittle away at the fat on your hips and thighs, depending on your genetics, you may or may not be able to achieve that coveted space in between the thighs.

There’s no point fretting over things you have no control over. No amount of time, work or effort is going to cause the change you desire. It is simply a waste of time and energy. Accept the reality and let it go. This may include the few pockets of cellulite, or the pooch under your belly button, or your stretch marks. You have fat deposits that are healthy and necessary.

Remember, you are your own worst critic. I bet what you see in the mirror is not what the rest of the world sees.

I shall end with a bit of Gaga…just cause I love her! “You’re beautiful in your way, cause God makes no mistakes! You’re on the right track baby, you were born this way” :)

Own your potential girl!!
